The following three books comprise the three areas of guitar that will take you to the highest levels as a musician: College Level Scales, Arpeggios and Intervals.

These books have been used as the core guitar curriculum at the Atlanta Institute of Music (AIM) since 1998. They can be used for instruction, as well as by individual lead guitarists looking to take their playing to another level.

These books answer the questions most commonly asked by guitar students in an easy-to-understand manner. They include –

  • The ability to see the fret board clearly, something that is presented with great complexity in many other guitar materials.
  • NOW! These books have been updated. Using the CAGED system, each scale pattern has the chord form mapped out, so that you can see the chord. While most guitar books show you a scale or a chord, these books give you BOTH, so that you can visualize the scale around the chord and see the fret board better.
  • Tips from David Poole, which come from his years of experience teaching at AIM, as well as improvising on stage in all styles of music with other great players.

This is the MUST-HAVE book of guitar scales! It contains a comprehensive set of all the scales a guitar player could ever need for improvisation on the guitar, in any style of music. Unlike ANY OTHER guitar book on the market, the chords on which the scale is based are highlighted on most of the patterns! In addition, David Poole has added comments and tips on each mode or scale, something never done in any other guitar scale book.

The book contains the 21 modes that come from the major scale, harmonic minor scale, and melodic minor scale usable. It also tells you which scales are not as common or appealing as others. Therefore, you don't waste time on scales that are not used often.

You will not need to get any other book! Nothing will help you more with your improvisation skills when you are soloing in any style of music.

College-Level Guitar Scales contains all major scale modes, many Pentatonic scales, Blues scales, and others. It contains all modes of Melodic and Harmonic Minor, as well as Diminished, Whole-Tone, and the 8-note Dominant Scale, which is also known as the bebop scale in jazz. And, most importantly, it does not bog you down in hybrid scales which are scales with a note taken out or a note added.

Every scale in this book has at least five patterns to cover the whole fret board so you don't have to solo in one place. This book is just a stepping stone to understanding how to create your own hybrid scales and how to create your own lines for improvisation.

This unique book contains all the arpeggios for all chord types used in Jazz, Rock and other styles of guitar music. It also offers suggestions on how to play arpeggios over different chord types. For example, playing a C major 7th arpeggio over an A minor 7 th chord – something that is extremely common. OTHER BOOKS DO NOT TOUCH ON THIS!

If there is a chord, there is an arpeggio in this book for it. Most guitar players do not use arpeggios, because they are so difficult to play.

This compendium includes Major 7 th , Minor 7 th , Dominant 7 th , Minor 7 th Flat 5, Diminished, Major 7 th Sharp 5, Augmented 7 th ,Triad, Modal arpeggios, and many more arpeggios, which are used in jazz and other styles of music. There isn't another book out there that contains all these arpeggios together for your reference. There are five patterns for every arpeggio in this book, which cover the whole fret board.

This book will teach you the most important thing to understand music and especially guitar: Intervals.

An interval is the distance between two notes. It is essential, as a guitar player, to see intervals on the fret board. For example, chords are built from 1, 3, 5, and 7 of the scale. If you do not understand intervals , you can memorize this formula, but it will not get you anywhere if you can't see it on the fret board.

The goal of this book is to help you visualize the fret board better and understand why a chord, scale, and arpeggio is shaped the way it is. In other words, how good of a carpenter would you be if you didn't know how to tell the distance between two points? According to David Poole, “THIS BOOK IS SO IMPORTANT! I can't express it in words. This should be the foundation before learning any advanced guitar scales or arpeggios.”
